What Mbps Really Means (And What It Doesn't)

Mbps stands for megabits per second — the standard unit ISPs use to advertise speed. It measures how much data can travel across your connection in one second. A plan advertised as "200 Mbps" can theoretically move 200 million bits of data per second.

Here's the practical translation: streaming a standard HD video typically requires around 5–8 Mbps. A 4K stream can need 15–25 Mbps. Video calls generally use 3–8 Mbps depending on quality. The more devices actively using your connection at once, the more that advertised number gets divided up among them.

One important distinction: advertised speeds are almost always download speeds — how fast data comes to your device. Upload speed (data going out) is often much lower, especially on cable and DSL plans. If you work from home, video conference frequently, or back up large files to the cloud, upload speed deserves as much attention as download speed. Latency and Data Caps: The Terms Plans Hide in Small Print

Latency measures the delay — typically in milliseconds (ms) — between when your device sends a request and when it gets a response. Unlike Mbps, which is about volume, latency is about responsiveness. A 1 Gbps connection with 200ms latency will still feel sluggish during a video call or online game because every interaction involves a noticeable pause.

For everyday browsing and streaming, latency under 100ms is generally fine. Online gaming and real-time video calls perform noticeably better below 50ms. Satellite internet connections — particularly older geostationary satellite services — have historically had latency of 500–600ms due to the distance signals must travel, though newer low-earth-orbit satellite networks have improved this significantly.

A data cap (sometimes called a data allowance or monthly threshold) is the total amount of data you can use in a billing cycle before your ISP throttles your speed or charges overage fees. Not all plans have caps, but many do — particularly mobile and cable plans. Caps are measured in gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB). Streaming a 4K movie can use 7 GB or more per hour, so caps add up quickly in households with multiple heavy users.

If your plan has a cap, your bill or account dashboard should show your current usage. Hitting the cap mid-month doesn't always mean a hard cutoff — many ISPs reduce speeds instead, which is called throttling. Check your service agreement to know which applies to you.

Mbps
